Yet Twilight succeeds as a novel nonetheless because the events create pleasure for readers. When I read the book, it gave me all the wonderfully vertiginous feelings of falling in love: the excitement, the wonder, the sense that the world had reorganized and was prioritized around this one other person. Creating those feelings in readers is a true literary accomplishment, just as important (or even more so) as having a well-structured plot, just as Bella’s emotions are as important as any ginormous battle or explosion. And where pleasurable feelings exist, we readers often don’t mind repetition for a while, because it means we get to dwell in those feelings that much longer. Still, I eventually got impatient with the book, waiting for some real change to happen already. If the same kind of events occur over and over again in your novel and they give you intense pleasure, that’s a good beginning! You just need to be sure that pleasure extends to readers, and/or that you show some kind of change proceeding out of each event.

Indeed, Twilight usefully illustrates the difference between events and action. An event can be any movement shown within a narrative work, like the characters going out to dinner, or traveling cross-country, or playing baseball. In contrast, true dramatic action is an event that:
